SD-WAN and NFV: Building Blocks for Next-Gen Network Architecture

The world is virtual today. And what makes it more happening is the vast number of growing virtualized networks. Carrying one of the world’s most critical resources currently, Data, Enterprise Networks today are an imperial part of Business growth. We must be thankful to SD-WAN and NFV, 21st enterprise networking requirements are met.

What is SD-WAN?

SD-WAN is protocoled to determine the most active path to route the application traffic between the data center and other branch locations. It virtualizes the network connections using cloud-based management with automation, simplifying the conveyance of services. The traffic volume can be segmented, partitioned, and secured by shortening the deployment of new links while constantly optimizing them.

What is NFV?

Network Function Virtualization is a network architecture concept that has been widely used in IT companies due to new evolving technologies in recent years. This concept helps to virtualize entire classes of network node functions into building blocks that may connect, or chain together, to create communication services.

With NFV we can know how to run SDN functions independent of any specific hardware platform that is implemented as the infrastructure platform that orchestrates VNFs. Data centers have long used NFV, but the concept has more recently become coupled with SD-WAN to leverage the benefits in individual and remote branches.

NFV and SDN: What’s the Difference?

SD-WAN and NVF can function independently but are not dependent on each other. However, the networking world prefers the services and benefits when combined together.

With SD-WAN, managing and handling large networks becomes relaxed as it helps to establish a fully automated network architecture by enabling policy-based decisions to plan the incoming traffic and data. When connected at the core, both NFV and SDN allow enterprises to develop a robust digital transformation strategy helping to bring agility and flexibility to craft unique customer experiences. Flexibility in creating and deploying NFVs will be the defining aspect of the SD-WAN solutions.

On the other hand, Network Functions Virtualization is an architecture that streamlines information sharing, facilitates procedures, and streamlines compatibility and deployment as well as maintenance procedures. Due to the above-mentioned reasons, it is preferable to go with both NFV and SD-WAN.

Why Networking Business Needs SD-WAN?

2020 looks to be a difficult year for business growth and the economy, where the whole world is fighting against COVID-19. Many companies and organizations have provided long-term work from home for all the employees with a tagline: Stay Home, Stay Safe!!

Networking companies are putting extra efforts to provide a fast and speedy network for work from home customers. In recent years, new business needs and market trends have resulted in improved bandwidth necessities, extra latency-sensitive applications, and more support on network availability and quality.

The need for Good Connectivity

Reliable and trustworthy connectivity is the lifeblood of any organization. Seeing the pandemic situation, organizations are increasingly turning to opt for new and latest technologies to achieve the best connectivity solutions at the most affordable prices. SD–WAN (Software-defined – Wide Area Network) is the newest innovation to optimize WAN technology for faster, flexible, and cheaper business connectivity.

SD-WAN Basics

Software-defined networking gained decent traction in recent years, and the skyward trend seems all set to continue in 2021. SD-WAN comes with an innovative architectural model and the ability to deliver a lot of critical networking services namely: automated provisioning, network virtualization, and network programmability supportive to win adoption in enterprises.

SD-WAN is a Software-defined wide area network that most businesses use to connect geographically distributed locations like branch offices and work sites. It aids to enhance network performance and produces a safe, secure network governed by bandwidth and traffic policies that can be quickly and centrally configured. The world of software-defined networking is still evolving.

SD-WAN has proved to be a game-changer to many small and mid-level organizations as it mixes and matches connection links to avoid dropouts. If network performance matters for your business, then SD-WAN is the best choice.

Multinationals increasingly have offices in remote locations where connectivity can be an issue. Call may drop and unclear voice leads to lack of communication and transmission of data. SD-WAN permits to improve their infrastructure while satisfying performance requirements.

How Does NFV Expand End User Experience?

Today the whole world is fighting against the virus COVID-19. Many organizations are providing work from home facilities to employees.

Seeing the rising competition from operators and employees working from home, the telecommunications service providers today is delivering disruptive and innovative services. To support their customers by providing uninterruptable services the network must be stable, reliable, and scalable, such as one enabled by Network Function Virtualization (NFV).

IT field is the most growing and expanding sector having customers who want to avail of its basic services such as voice calls, banking transactions with high-speed internet downloads, and streaming services.
The key component of NFV is a modern virtualized architecture that virtualizes entire network functions with standard vendor-neutral hardware and IT infrastructure, simplifying better-qualityend-to-end communications services.

By developing NFV and SDN, cost reduction is very much important when we keep moving from one generation to another generation of technology advancement which utilizes minimum network bandwidth and boosts latency.

Due to technology advancements, edge computing and distributed cloud have a dedicated track of services to be rendered to the end-users. There seemed to be a broad consensus regarding the high-level drivers and predictable abilities for edge computing.

What are the benefits of Network Function Virtualization (NFV)?

Now, NFV has been accepted wholeheartedly by network operators across the world

  • Flexibility: Enables operators to be flexible that help to save cost and downtime. Comes with new technology innovations.
  • Rapid Development of Solutions: Any interruptions at the customer location can be repaired. Interrupted services can be provided to the end-users.
  • Reduction in Operational Cost: NFV entails a network operator to accomplish the network efficiently and utilize the spare time in network maintenance, experimentation, modification of the network, etc. This plays a vital role to cut down the operational cost.
  • Less Energy Consumption: NFV implementation helps in network monitors and repairs VNF instances directly in the software without any manual intervention. NFV will make remotely setting up a server on the cloud much easier than it is today.
