System and method for conveying backup and restore data via email

Patent number & year

US Patent 8060473, awarded in 2011

Technology comprising various methods and systems to use email to convey backup and restore data. One method involves: receiving a request to perform a backup system operation; generating an email that includes data and metadata (which is associated with the data); and sending the email to an email address associated with a backup system component. The request can be a backup request, in which case the data includes data to be backed up, and the backup system component is a backup server. Alternatively, the request can be receiving a restore request. In this scenario, the data includes data to be restored, and the backup system component is a backup client.

Backup search agents for use with desktop search tools

Patent number & year

US Patent 7890527, awarded in 2011

Technology comprisingvarious methods and systems for implementing agents that facilitate end user searches of a backup catalog via a desktop search tool. One method involves: receiving a search request from a desktop search tool, which is configured for use by an end user of a backup system; searching a backup catalog, maintained by the backup system, in response to the search request; and providing a result of searching the backup catalog to the desktop search tool.

System and apparatus for adaptively selecting file recall modes

Patent number & year

Systems and methods for adaptively selecting file-recall modes and enabling the intelligent movement of data in hierarchical storage management. A computer-implemented method based on environmental properties that includes 1) identifying a request to recall a file from a secondary storage system to a primary storage system, 2) identifying at least one environmental property associated with the file, 3) selecting, based at least in part on the identified environmental property, a recall mode for recalling the file, and then 4) recalling the file from the secondary storage system to the primary storage system using the selected recall mode.

Impact

Saves time and effort in recalling data

Edge Networking Router Devices and Systems

Patent number & year

An Edge Networking Router Device and System – comprising an AI model crafted to execute on a thin client (a router device) – that first identifies applications on networks such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, Skype etc. and then supports SDWAN functionality efficiently. Joint patent held with our customers.

Impact:

Enables enterprises to take appropriate actions like customized bandwidth provisioning for specific applications.

SAN simulator

Patent number & year

US Patent 7370164, awarded in 2008

Encapsulates and abstracts the behaviour of SAN devices, without requiring actual hardware devices, creating a virtual SAN with a configurable number of SAN objects. This virtual SAN can be easily accessed while performing various SAN management tasks and can test various permutations and combinations of SAN devices in a virtual environment.

Impact

Replaces expensive hardware devices required during testing of engineering products.

Single scan for a base machine and all associated virtual machines

Patent number & year

US Patent 7802302, awarded in 2010

A scanning manager that scans the file systems of virtual machines running on a base computer, instead of running a virus scan on each virtual machine which is time-consuming and expensive. To help the virus scanners understand the base data stored in virtual machines, a reverse engineering mapper was developed from the virtual machine’s base storage, giving the virus scanners access to the file system.

Impact

Reduced scanning time, ensured no viruses were missed, and reduced costs.

Backup of virtual machines from the base machine

Patent number & year

US Patent 7370164, awarded in 2008

Backup manager technology, developed during the advent of virtual machines, when the back-up of each virtual machine’s data was sent to a separate device, necessitating the purchase of multiple licenses. This patented technology ensures the backup of one, multiple, or all virtual machine(s) running on the base computer, in conjunction with a full or incremental backup of the base computer, or independently.

Impact

Allowed clients to buy a single licence instead of multiple ones for the virtual machines, and save on costs by only backing up the base hard disk of the computer.
